Gutter Repair

Gutter and Downspout Repair: what it covers

Quick answer

Gutters and downspouts carry roof water to a point well clear of the wall. A repair restores the fall in the gutter, seals the joints, clears the outlets and makes sure the downspout discharges where the water can go.

Gutter and Downspout Repair illustration for Albuquerque, NM

A gutter is a small part of the roof with a large job. It collects the water that runs off the edge, and it has to carry that water to a downspout and away from the wall. When the gutter sags, leaks at a joint or is blocked, the water runs down the fascia and the wall, and the damage shows at the bottom of the building rather than at the top.

In this city, gutters are a first check after a storm. The hail reports in the FACTS sheet are a reason to look at the whole roof edge, and the gutter is the part of that edge that shows damage first. Dents in the gutter line or a bent downspout are a sign the roof has taken a hit.

This page explains the common gutter and downspout repairs and how a roofer or a gutter technician checks them. The work is usually small, and it is quoted by the run, so you can see what each length will cost to put right.

Warning signs

Signs you need gutter and downspout repair

Do not climb a ladder against a gutter to clear it in wind or near power lines. Keep clear of overhead lines when working near the roof edge, and use a second person on any ladder.

  • A gutter that holds water in a low spot rather than draining toward the downspout
  • Joints that drip or leak at the seam between two lengths
  • A downspout that is bent, split or disconnected at its elbow
  • Stains or streaks on the fascia or the wall directly below the gutter
  • Gutter brackets that have pulled out or sag under the weight of debris
  • A downspout that discharges against the wall or into a bed rather than away from the foundation
Our process

How our gutter and downspout repair visit works

  1. Walk the gutter run and check the fall

The gutter is checked along its length with a level or a string line. The water should run toward the downspout, and any low spot where it stands is marked.

  2. Check the joints, brackets and outlets

Each joint is checked for leaks, each bracket for security and each outlet for blockage. Debris is removed and the outlet is tested with a hose.

  3. Reset or replace the sagging run

Sagging runs are reset to the correct fall and refastened. Damaged lengths are replaced, and the joints between lengths are sealed with the product the gutter maker names.

  4. Repair or reconnect the downspout

Bent or split downspouts are replaced or repaired, and the elbow is reconnected so that the water drops clear of the wall. Where a downspout discharges too close to the wall, an extension is added.

  5. Test the run and record the work

The gutter is tested with a hose, and the record shows each run that was repaired, the fall that was set and the downspout that was connected.

Why does water from a gutter damage the wall?

Because a gutter that overflows, leaks or discharges at the wall sends the water down the fascia and the face of the wall, where it stains the finish and can soak into the material beneath.

A gutter is meant to carry water to the downspout. When it cannot, the water goes over the edge at the lowest point and runs down the wall below. Over time that runs a stain line on the fascia and the wall face, and it can work into the joints of the cladding and the top of the foundation.

The fix is to keep the gutter in fall, keep its outlets clear and make sure the downspout discharges away from the building. Each of these is part of a gutter repair, and each is easy to check from the ground.

  • Keep the gutter in fall toward the downspout
  • Keep the outlets clear of debris
  • Discharge the downspout away from the wall

How should a downspout discharge after a repair?

Clear of the wall and onto ground that falls away from the building, or into a drain or a splash block that carries the water further.

A downspout that discharges at the wall sends the water back to where the building needs it least. A repair should bring the outlet clear of the wall by a distance the gutter maker and local practice support, and onto ground that falls away. A splash block or a short extension is often enough.

Where the ground is level or falls toward the building, the water has to be carried further, and that work is quoted separately. The roofer or the gutter technician will say what the site needs.

  • Clear the outlet of the wall
  • Discharge onto ground that falls away
  • Carry the water further where the site is flat

What belongs in a gutter repair scope?

Each run, each joint, each downspout and the fall set on each run, with the materials named and a test after the work.

A gutter scope should name each run by its position on the building. It should record the work on each run, the fall that was set and the downspouts that were connected or replaced. A line that says gutters repaired with no detail gives you no way to check the work later.

The record should also say what was not replaced. Gutters that are sound but dented, or fascia that is rotted behind a run, should be named, so you can plan the next job.

  • Each run and each downspout named by position
  • The fall set on each run and the test after the work
  • Any damage found but not repaired, named

How often should gutters be checked?

After each large storm and at least once a year from the ground, with the outlets cleared and the fall checked where a run looks low.

Gutters are the part of the roof a homeowner can check most easily. A look from the ground after each large storm shows whether a run is holding water, whether a downspout is discharging at the wall and whether a joint is dripping. A once-a-year check, with the outlets cleared, catches most problems before they reach the wall.

Write the date of each check on the same record as the roof's other notes. A gutter that keeps dropping out of fall is usually a bracket problem, and the record shows where the brackets need to be moved or replaced.

  • Look from the ground after each large storm
  • Clear the outlets at least once a year
  • Note the bracket positions where a run keeps dropping

Why gutter and downspout repair is different in Greater Albuquerque

The hail reports in the FACTS sheet are a reason to check the gutter line after a large storm, because dents in the gutter show the roof has taken a hit.

Gutters on the city's houses and on the outlying properties in the county are repaired in the same way. The number of runs and the access decide the quote.

The FACTS sheet gives no sourced roof-type or housing-age share, so this page does not claim how many buildings in the city have gutters that need work.

FAQ

Gutter and Downspout Repair FAQs

Can I clear the gutters myself?

From a secure ladder with a second person present, yes. Do not reach over the roof edge, and do not clear them in wind or wet weather.

Why does my gutter overflow only in heavy rain?

Usually because the outlet or the downspout cannot carry the flow at the peak, or because the fall in the run is wrong. The roofer or gutter technician checks both.

Is a gutter repair part of a roof repair?

It can be. A roof job often includes the gutter line at the edge, and the scope says which runs are included.

Will a gutter repair stop water getting into the wall?

It stops the gutter from spilling at the wall. A wall that is already wet also needs to be checked for the source of the damage.
